Chinese newspaper People's Daily Online reports that Shanghai GM, a joint venture between Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC) and General Motors, officially introduced its new Buick LaCrosse.
Although the car derives its architecture and design from 2005 Buick LaCrosse created for the American market, the Chinese version has been reengineered by the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) to match specific needs of local consumers.

British customers now able to order the Volkswagen EOS convertible coupe for as low as £19,385. For this money they will get an inline-6 2-liter gasoline engine that produces maximum of 259 hp and is mated with a 6-speed manual transmission. The standard package also includes 16-inch alloy wheels, ESP, twin front airbags, combined curtain and side impact airbags, semi-automatic air-conditioning, fog-lights, electric windows, heated adjustable door mirrors, a radio/CD player and parking sensors.

MarketWatch reports that DaimlerChrysler AG and UK-based consortium Project Kimber agreed to continue their negotiations on the future of the Smart Roadster minicar. Edmunds.com says that estimated price of the deal will be less than $17 million.

During the Geneva Motor Show 2006, which will take place in Switzerland this March, Mercedes-Benz plans to surprise the public with a whole bunch of brand new and redesigned models. Among others the company is expected to present its supercharged R-Class touring wagon that features a powerful 6.3-litre V8 engine. But the most anticipated is the pair of CLS and CLK sport cars tuned up in its Mercedes-AMG facility.

Mazda Motor announced their plans to present the new Mazdaspeed 3 sport compact in Geneva. As the company puts it in its press release, the new Mazdaspeed 3, which will be marketed in Europe as Mazda 3 MPS (Mazda Performance Series), 'will be the fourth Mazda to carry the Mazdaspeed logo, just like the now selling Mazdaspeed 6 and Mazdaspeed MX-5' (alas, the authors of the press-release do not mention the name of the third car in the speedy family, so it must be the third one, I suppose).

Japanese brand Lexus starts selling its newer version of RX 350 luxury SUV. The redesigned 2007 Lexus RX 350 now comes with a more powerful 3.5-litre engine, satellite-ready audio system and better noise-killing capabilities. The model that sells on Canadian market will be assembled at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) plant, the only one outside Japan that has a privilege to build Lexus cars.

Korean newspaper Chosunilbo says that Hyundai Sonata topped Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in its fight for the 'Best Family Sedan' prize in the 2006 Drivers' Choice Awards sponsored by PBS' "MotorWeek". Sonata is the first Korean-made car that won 'Best Family Sedan' award.

Despite constantly growing prices on imported oil, Chrysler Group keeps working on new larger-than-life sport utility vehicles. During the next two to three years the automaker plans two throw to the market at least five such cars. The first of them will be 2007 Dodge Nitro mid-size SUV.
Future buyers will be presented with a choice of two V6 engines. One of them is a 3.7-litre SOHC engine with ETC that features 210-hp at 5200 rpm. The other is even more powerful 4.0-litre with 255-hp at 5800 rpm that will be installed on a more expensive Nitro R/T model. Customers living outside the US and Canada will also be able to order Dodge Nitro with a diesel engine.

Chevrolet is going to premiere its brand new Chevy Epica family sedan at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. The new Epica will come with a choice of two transversally mounted engines: a 2.0-litre in-line six cylinder (142PS) and a 2.0-litre direct-injection turbo-diesel with common-rail (150PS). Both engines can be ordered with either sofisticated automatic or manual five-speed gearboxes.

So, it will happen. GM CEO Rick Wagoner officially confirmed that General Motors is working on a hybrid version of Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV, which is set for release in late 2007. Escalade's hybrid transmission designed at GM's Allison division will be assembled at the Powertrain Baltimore Transmission plant. According to the corporate press release, the heavy-duty two-mode hybrid transmission will be similar to those used in a Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs.
