Audi A5 takes A4 cabrio's place
The upcoming Audi A5 convertible will probably be assembled at the facility in Neckarsulm, Germany.
The new soft-top Audi A5, positioned as a lower-premium class vehicle targeting Mercedes-Benz CLK buyers, will replace the current Audi A4 cabriolet, which will then be built only in sedan and station wagon models.
The new vehicle will be officially presented to the public in autumn 2008.
It will be Audi's first attempt at developing new vehicles using its recently unveiled modular platform strategy -- just like it's done in computer industry, where different models of PCs share the same standardized motherboards, power supply units, etc.
Audi hopes that this approach will help the company significantly cut development costs and allow for quicker introduction of new trims, doubling Audi's global sales to 1.4 million units by 2015.
