VW Polo receives a six-speed Tiptronic gearbox

You won't believe it, but the big VW has equipped its little Polo with a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, previously installed only into much more expensive vehicles.



The six-speed auto comes with Polos equipped with 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. Mated with the 105-hp motor, the automatic lets the car achieve 60 mph in 11.3 seconds. Not really impressive, but the Tiptronic ensures a really good mileage, making the Polo consume only 7.4 liters of gas per 100 kilometers (that's about 31 miles per gallon).

The gearbox adds an "S" (which is for "Sport") to the standard P-R-N-D sequence. In the Sport mode the automatic shifts gears at higher revolutions, not using the sixth gear at all, hitting the top speed at the fifth. The 6th gear is used only in the economy mode.

In its press release, Volkswagen says that the Polo with the six-speed transmission will have a starting price of €15,500. The Polo Goal will start at €16,875 but its set of features will offer a price saving of €918 if the optional equipment is ordered separately.
