Fuel-cell-powered Ford Explorer makes a splash at LAAS'2006
New fuel-cell-powered Ford Explorer is unveiled today at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show. The SUV stands out from the crowd due to its ability to travel about 350 miles on a single fill-up. That's the best result for the current fuel-cell vehicles.
The fuel-cell-powered Ford Explorer that features an advanced electric all-wheel-drive retains its six-passenger seating capacity and luggage space because its hydrogen storage tank sits in the space, which previously belonged to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Making a larger fuel tank, which is holding 10kg of hydrogen at 700 bar, Ford's engineers successfully reached the record-breaking 350-mile driving range for this type of vehicles. That's about 35 mpg in a city cycle.
