At the 2007
DSEi military trade show, Chrysler has presented to the stunned public its new, rough and brutal,
Jeep J8 multipurpose vehicle. Based on the
2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, the new vehicle has enough strength join the Army.
The new Jeep J8 features a reinforced frame, extra-strong axles, brakes and suspension components, including a leaf-spring suspension system in the rear, as well as Command-Trac four-wheel drive system.
Stronger bumpers with tow eyes allow for helicopter transportation and the hood-mounted snorkel lets the J8 to wade in water up to 762 mm (30 inches) deep and survive sandstorms for up to five hours.
The vehicle is motivated by a powerful 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 118 kW (158 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb.-ft.) of torque, providing towing capability of up to 3,500 kg (7,716 lbs.). With all the enhancements, the J8 allows for a payload of up to a maximum of 1,339 kg (2,952 lbs.) and is armor-ready so the car can be used as a command vehicle or a troop carrier on the front line.
However, the J8 won't replace the legendary HUMVEE.
The Jeep J8 will be available in spring 2008 and will be produced in a Chrysler joint-venture facility in Cairo, Egypt.
