Jeep J8 multipurpose joins the Army
Based on the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, the extra-rugged Jeep J8 is versatile enough to go to military service. It won't replace the legendary HUMVEE, though.
The new Jeep J8 features a reinforced frame, extra-strong axles, brakes and suspension components, including a leaf-spring suspension system in the rear, as well as Command-Trac four-wheel drive system. Stronger bumpers with tow eyes allow for helicopter transportation and the hood-mounted snorkel lets the J8 to wade in water up to 762 mm (30 inches) deep and survive sandstorms for up to five hours.
The vehicle is motivated by a powerful 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 118 kW (158 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb.-ft.) of torque, providing towing capability of up to 3,500 kg (7,716 lbs.). With all the enhancements, the J8 allows for a payload of up to a maximum of 1,339 kg (2,952 lbs.) and is armor-ready so the car can be used as a command vehicle or a troop carrier on the front line.
The Jeep J8 will be available in spring 2008 and will be produced in a Chrysler LLC joint-venture facility in Cairo, Egypt. Boy, I want one.
