The 2006 Lexus IS 220d Sport entry-luxury rear-wheel drive car comes equipped with a 175 horsepower four-cylinder diesel engine with a common rail fuel injection system.
Designed to compete against the BMW 3-Series sport sedans, the new car offers you energetic, well-thought exterior design and comfortable interior, although, like it often happens with Japanese cars, some of you may be somewhat disappointed with daringly cheap pieces of plastic that can be seen here and there.
Originally launched last year with a pair of V6 gasoline engines, the car was considered powerful, but thirsty, so the introduction of a 2.2-liter inline-4 oil-burner was only a matter of time.
Although the motor’s power and torque — which is respectively 175 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) available at 2,000 rpm — are pretty much the same, the new model features a small tweak to its rear axle.
Lifting the differential gear ratio from 2.474 to 3.200, Lexus’s engineers make the car even more comfortable to operate on the final drive.
As to the electronics, the new Lexus IS 220d Sport comes with brand’s exclusive VDIM system, which controls working of other components of the active safety system, such as ABS, EBD, VSC, EPC and TRC.
To give the car an even sportier look, Lexus equips the IS 220d with 18-inch alloy wheels, spots-style pedals and metal-effect trim details.
Pushing comfort to the very extreme, Lexus offers the car with climate and cruise controls, rain-sensing wipers, parking sensors for both front and rear drive, push-button start and so on.
The Japanese company promises that the 220d will feature 134mph top speed and 0-62 miles acceleration of about 8.9 seconds. Not really impressive, but still acceptable.
Just bear in mind that, like a number of other entry-level Lexus models that I encountered in my life, the car offers a level of soundproofing that can be unacceptable for those who got used to the European vehicles of this class.
Even the car with gasoline engine is not particularly easy on your ears, but the Lexus IS 220d with its rattling oil-burner may, noisy tires and stiff suspension may become a source of constant headache if it is your first diesel and a first Lexus.
