The Japanese brand has successfully introduced its ‘all-new’ 2007 Suzuki XL7 crossover SUV to the American market.
The new XL7 is new indeed, because it is based on a front-wheel-drive car platform known as Theta, while the older version was truck-based and featured that famous body-on-frame architecture, which is still only choice for the die-hard enthusiasts of off-road driving.
The new car sports a less rugged unibody design that, while allowing some serious weight-saving, makes the car less capable when it comes even to mild off-roading.
To retain its body strength, Suzuki’s engineers decided to equip the new XL7 with special full-length underbody rails (just as they did with the new Suzuki Grand Vitara, which is now, too, delivered with a ladder-reinforced monocoque body.)
The 2007 Suzuki XL7 features four-wheel independent suspension and a GM-designed 3.6-liter V6 DOHC engine that produces 250 hp @ 6,200 RPM with 243 lb-ft @ 3,200 RPM of torque.
The engine is mated with a five-speed automatic gearbox AF33-5 Aisin AW with so called ‘manumatic’ control.
Suzuki plans to supply the new XL7 in Premium and Luxury trims.
Both trims will come with standard front-wheel-drive transmission, while a more off-road (and bad weather) capable all-wheel-drive system can be ordered as an option.
The XL7 Luxury package will offer a DVD entertainment system for rear passengers, 17-inch alloy wheels with P235/60R17 tires and a sunroof.
There is also a navigation system in the list of options, however, for some reason that I refuse to understand, it is not compatible with the DVD equipment, so future buyers will have to choose between the former and the latter.
Suzuki expects that the crossover will be priced in a range from $23,000 to $29,000 making it a good competitor to the 2007 model year Chevrolet Equinox, Honda CR-V and the Toyota Highlander family SUV.
