London Metropolitan Police has acquired 117 new 2006 Honda Civic Hybrids to be put on duty. First introduced around five years ago as a Japanese Domestic Market model, the car was completely overhauled last year. The vehicle now sports a more powerful (20hp) electric motor, smaller Nickel-metal hydride batteries, as well as a more potent internal combustion engine with three stage i-VTEC and VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) systems.
The hybrid vehicles are leased on a two-year/24,000-mile contract.
All the Honda Civic Hybrids will be used by the MP’s Community Support Officers as part of a Safer Neighborhood scheme, which is supposed to give Londoners a little bit more security (or of a feeling thereof) through a little bit less of privacy.
It is planned, that officers will use Civic Hybrids to get from their police stations to the foot patrol area.
