New fuel-cell-powered Ford Explorer crossover SUV is unveiled today at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The SUV stands out from the crowd due to its ability to travel about 350 miles on a single fill-up. That’s the best result for the current fuel-cell vehicles.

The fuel-cell-powered Ford Explorer that features an advanced electric all-wheel-drive retains its six-passenger seating capacity and luggage space because its hydrogen storage tank sits in the space, which previously belonged to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Making a larger fuel tank, which is holding 10kg of hydrogen at 700 bar, Ford’s engineers successfully reached the record-breaking 350-mile driving range for this type of vehicles. That’s about 35 mpg in a city cycle.
