Being five to twenty times less expensive than a typical Italian-built monster only an oil tycoon would afford to drive, the new Caterham R500 Superlight roadster nevertheless gives you much more in terms of speed, acceleration and sheer driving pleasure.




You still need a private race-track to fully enjoy all these qualities even though the new Caterham R500 Superlight is officially certified as a street-legal vehicle. As most vehicles in this segment, the car is fun to drive in skilled hands, but is not very forgiving to people who make silly mistakes.

One of the reason for this, besides the lack of usual electronic assist systems is that, sporting a powerful 263hp 2.0-liter inline four-banger Duratec engine and weighing only 506kg (1115 pounds), the car is 19 kg lighter than the last year’s Caterham Superlight R400.

Thanks to its much lighter body, the R500 takes only 2.88 seconds to accelerate from zero to 60mph and is top speed is limited at generous 150mph (241km/h).

The car is shipped with a six-speed sequential-shift gearbox, ventilated disks with four-pot calipers, Avon CR500 race tires and sports suspension with ovalized wishbones and fully adjustable dampers.
