Volt-based Opel Ampera PHEV will conquer Europe in 2011

GM plans to bring to the European market a family of electric cars built on its E-Flex PHEV architecture.

The EV invasion will be led by the already famous Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid (pictured). Since the car will be pretty expensive and the Chevrolet is not considered a top notch marque here in Europe, GM will have to sell the Volt under the Opel brand.

Talking to Automotive News Europe back in May, GM Europe’s president Carl Peter Foster confirmed that during the initial phase the electric-powered Volt-based Opel Ampera will be built in the United States.

The plugin hybrid would then be exported to Europe at a price, which will be about €10,000 higher than that of a similarly powered car. Later, the electric car’s production will be moved to Germany.
