2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid goes on sale soon

During a press conference at the NAIAS motor show in Detroit, BMW Sales and Marketing Director Ian Robertson has confirmed that his company will soon bring to market at least a pair of new hybrid-powered cars.

Besides a long-awaited BMW 750i ActiveHybrid executive sedan equipped with a so-called mild hybrid system, there will also be a full-fledged 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid sports activity coupe based on the BMW X6 xDrive50i model powered by a mighty 4.4-liter V8 engine.

Details are still scarce, but it is expected that the hybrid-powered version of the X6 will return about 20 percent better fuel efficiency over the standard 2009 X6 model, meaning that you’ll be able to travel about 14.5 miles on a single gallon of gasoline in city cycle (about 16.2 l/100km).

It’s still enough fuel to heat half the Ukraine for a week, but at least you won’t have to buy a diesel to save an extra buck or two.

The aforementioned twin-turbocharged V8 powerplant, which is good for 400 hp, will be assisted by a pair of electric synchronous motors together delivering 177 horsepower. The peak torque of the system will go as high as 575 lb-ft, which roughly makes almost 780 Nm.

Both hybrids will be officially introduced this fall at the motor show in Frankfurt and will likely go on sale by the end of year 2009, Robertson said. No info about the vehicles’ estimated price yet.
